Choosing the right subjects for GCSEs and A Levels is a pivotal moment in a student’s academic journey. It’s a decision that can shape their future pathways, influencing university choices and career opportunities. Here at Alice Smith, we recognise the significance of this process and are dedicated to providing our Year 9 and Year 11 students with the support and resources they need to make informed and confident decisions. Our comprehensive Options Programme is designed to guide them through this exciting experience.

The journey begins with our Options Assembly, which serves as an introduction to the entire options process. During this assembly, we outline key dates, explain the different subject choices available, and emphasise the importance of careful consideration. It’s not just about logistics; it’s also about igniting students’ curiosity. We encourage them to reflect on their strengths, interests, passions, and ambitions.

We provide an overview of subjects that may be new to the students, such as Psychology, Economics, Moving Image Arts, Media Studies, Digital Photography, and Additional Maths. We also share information about the support structures in place to help them make their choices. Additionally, we encourage students to consider the types of assessment that may suit them - whether coursework or exam-only options - while inspiring them to be courageous in their decisions.

After the assembly, students will have the opportunity to meet with older students who are currently studying subjects of interest. Hearing directly from these students is both impactful and enlightening.

Students are provided with the opportunity to explore subjects that interest them through our Taster Lessons. These lessons are designed to give students a genuine experience of what studying a particular GCSE or A Level entails. They allow students to sample different teaching styles, the types of content covered, and the skills they will develop. This practical approach goes beyond mere reading of subject descriptions, enabling students to truly engage with the material. As a result, they gain a deeper understanding of the subjects and can better identify their potential passions.

A key component of our Options Programme is the Options Expo. This event brings together students, parents, and our dedicated team of subject specialists in a friendly and engaging environment. Imagine a vibrant marketplace of ideas where students and parents can explore various stalls, engaging in conversations with teachers who are passionate about their subjects.

It’s an opportunity to ask important questions, delve into course structures and content, and understand how each subject is relevant to future careers and pathways. Subject specialists will be available to discuss the skills students will develop, the assessment methods used, and the potential career opportunities each subject can provide. We will also have student representatives sharing their experiences of studying specific subjects.

For parents, this is an invaluable chance to gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum and how it aligns with their child's strengths and interests. The Options Expo encourages a collaborative approach to decision-making, ensuring that both students and parents are well-informed and aligned in their choices.

Throughout the entire Options process, we provide guidance and support. We understand that this is a significant decision, and we want our students to feel empowered and confident in their choices. Our dedicated team of tutors, subject teachers, and Higher Education Counsellors is available to offer personalised assistance. All Year 11 students will also have a one-on-one meeting with our Higher Education team to help them explore their options, understand their strengths, and align their subject choices with their future higher education and career goals. We encourage open communication between students, parents, and teachers to create a collaborative network of support.

We believe that our Options selection programme at Alice Smith School empowers our students to take ownership of their learning journey. By providing a comprehensive and supportive framework, we equip them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed choices that will shape their future. We want them to select not just subjects, but also futures. Our goal is for them to advance into their IGCSE and A Level studies with enthusiasm, purpose, and a clear vision of where their choices might lead. The Options selection is more than just a process; it is an investment in our students’ futures, helping them become the architects of a brighter tomorrow and achieve their dreams.
