Internships can be invaluable to a student’s journey, offering a glimpse into the professional world while building critical skills. Exploring the value of internships is something that students are encouraged to consider as part of their career education lessons at the Alice Smith School.

We recognise the value of internship opportunities and provide support to help students explore and secure internships that align with their aspirations.

Personalised Career Support

As part of the Higher Education & Careers programme, our students are encouraged to consider internships and their potential value. Our Higher Education team works closely with students, tailoring guidance to meet individual needs. This personalised service includes:

  • Using Networks: Students are supported in finding internships either through their own contacts or by accessing providers listed in the school’s database.
  • Application Preparation: Our Higher Education team assists students with crafting tailored CVs, providing professional references, and developing the skills needed to communicate effectively in workplace settings.

While this is a personalised service based on individual needs and is not universally offered to all students, it ensures that those who seek internships receive comprehensive and targeted support.

Building Connections Through Alumni and Parents

We leverage our vibrant community of alumni and parents to provide insights into various industries and career pathways. We send out a parent survey each year to identify those who can contribute by offering career insights or placements.

Additionally, we collaborate with partner providers who offer both online and in-person experiences, though these often come with associated costs. When possible, we encourage students to explore opportunities within their own networks or through our school’s connections to minimise expenses and enhance the relevance of the experience.

The Value of an Internship

While we don’t actively publicise students’ internship placements, the focus remains on how these experiences enrich their personal growth and support their university applications. Students reflect on these opportunities to articulate the skills they’ve developed and the insights they’ve gained.

The debate around internships often centres on accessibility and fairness. High school internships can be challenging to navigate due to safeguarding implications, liability concerns, and varying quality levels. At Alice Smith School, we emphasise that internships, while beneficial, are not essential for post-18 pathways.

Instead, we encourage students to:

  • Explore super-curricular experiences such as online courses, research projects, or competitions.
  • Engage in volunteering to build soft skills and demonstrate meaningful contributions to their community.

Universities are typically better equipped to offer structured internship opportunities, and students can take advantage of these resources when they are older and more prepared to handle professional environments.

Tips for Students Thinking about an Internship

For students considering internships, preparation and reflection are key. Here are some practical tips:

  1. Define Your Goals: Consider why you want to pursue an internship and what you hope to gain from the experience.
  2. Prepare Thoroughly: Treat the application process as a learning opportunity for future job applications. Tailor your CV, research the company, and practice professional communication.
  3. Reflect on Your Experience: After completing an internship, focus on how the experience helped you grow. Reflect on the skills you developed, challenges you overcame, and insights you gained.

At Alice Smith School, we empower students with the tools and guidance they need to make informed decisions about internships and other career-building opportunities. Whether through personalised support, leveraging our community networks, or encouraging alternative experiences, we aim to help every student navigate their unique journey toward lifelong success.
