A few weeks ago, a little girl named Sophie stood in our Early Years outdoor play area - her hands covered in paint, and her face glowing with joy. She was completely immersed in painting a vibrant masterpiece, lost in the magic of her creation.
Some might call it βjust playing,β but Sophie was doing so much more. Through this, she was developing creative and critical thinking skills, exploring colour mixing, and learning to collaborate when a friend joined in.
Moments like these serve to reinforce the tremendous benefits to be had from a play-based education. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them.
As parents, we all want our children to grow into confident, curious, and capable individuals. But in a world that often feels rushed and overly structured, how do we ensure they get the right start?
Research shows that 92% of brain development occurs by age five, much of it driven by hands-on, sensory-rich experiences. Children need learning environments that spark their curiosity and encourage them to explore the world around them naturally.
At Alice Smith School, we design our learning spaces to inspire, engage, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.
