"Sustainability" eco club

By Ananya Gupta (Year 13) and the Eco Club Students

Eco Club hosted Eco Week at the Secondary Campus from 6th to 10th October, an initiative designed to promote environmental awareness and encourage sustainable habits across our school community. Throughout the week, students and staff took part in a range of engaging, eco-friendly activities from scrunchie and jewellery making, a movie screening and a donation drive for recycled fabrics. Each event aimed to inspire creativity and encourage conscious living,

Green Canteen Menu

We collaborated with Petite Cafe to create a bespoke Green Menu for every day of Eco Week. Students enjoyed delicious, sustainable-inspired meals like Chicken Pesto Burritos and Vegetable Cucumber sushi rolls, as well as sweet treats like Pandan Muffins, Kiwi & Grape Fruit cups, and more.

Our goal was to highlight the connection between our food choices and environmental impact. We raised awareness of sustainable eating and demonstrated that eco-friendly food can be both nutritious and enjoyable.

Fabric Donation Drive

Running throughout, the Fabric Donation Drive was a highlight of Eco Week and a fierce inter-house competition - who could donate the most?! Students were encouraged to donate old clothes and textiles for repurposing rather than discarding them. Across all four houses, we collected over 37kg of fabric!

In the end, Muir snatched the victory with a whopping 23kg of donations! Overall, the fabric donation drive was a success, not only preventing waste from ending up in landfills but also reminding us that sustainability can be collaborative and fun.

Movie screening

We held a movie screening of “Avatar” over three lunchtimes, where all students could enjoy the movie together and buy snacks like popcorn and cookies served in handmade recycled packaging. We chose Avatar because it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our environment; the story of Pandora reflects real issues here on Earth, such as biodiversity, deforestation and the need to live in harmony with nature, which closely aligns with our Eco Club values. All profits will be donated to an environmental charity (to be decided).

Scrunchie making

Students also had the exciting opportunity to create their own scrunchies from scrap fabric. They sewed and cut the fabric by themselves (with some help), and many students proudly completed their scrunchies to take home. This activity was an extension of our fabric drive, demonstrating practical and imaginative ways for students to reuse spare fabric and reduce waste at home.

Recycled Jewellery Making

Over two lunchtimes, students had the opportunity to craft their own unique beaded bracelets under the instruction of Keira (Year 12, member of the Eco Club). All bracelets were made from recycled plastic beads from the Precious Plastics recycling machine that repurposes waste plastic into colourful products like beads. We had a great turnout with over 40 bracelets being made.

Overall, our Eco Week was a great success, combining education, creativity, enjoyment and action to inspire the school community to live more sustainably. Whether through food, crafts, or collective initiatives, every participant played a part in making our campus a greener, more conscious place.

If Eco Week inspired you to take action for the environment or if you're passionate about science, sustainability, policy and looking for a way to make a real impact in our school and community while building valuable skills for the future, then the Eco Club is the place for you!
