At Alice Smith School, parents are essential to our thriving community. Our Class and Year Group Parent Representatives, whether at the Primary or Secondary Campus, play a key role in making connections, assisting families, and enhancing the school experience for all.
Volunteering as a Parent Rep is both rewarding and impactful. It offers parents the opportunity to contribute to the community while developing new skills and forming new relationships.
The Impact of our Parent Representatives
- Making a positive impact on the school community
Parent Reps help strengthen the school’s welcoming and vibrant culture by creating opportunities for families to connect. From organising social gatherings to supporting PTA events, Parent Reps contribute to the inclusive, supportive environment that makes Alice Smith so special. - Developing strong communication and collaboration skills
Our Parent Reps are skilled in clear and thoughtful communication between parents, teachers, and the PTA, helping to facilitate the sharing of reminders from the class or year / PTA / teachers to the parents. - Build stronger relationships with parents and educators
Parent Reps are the “connectors” in our community. Whether it’s welcoming a new family, bringing parents together for a coffee morning, or helping coordinate volunteers for events, the relationships built as a Parent Rep often last well beyond the school years.
The role of a Parent Representative as part of the PTA:
- To build community within the whole school through events and activities that involve students, teachers, and families.
- To create a welcoming environment for new families as they transition into Alice Smith and life in Kuala Lumpur.
Parent Reps in a Snapshot
- Term Length: One academic year
- Number of Representatives: At least two co-representatives per class or year group are encouraged to share responsibilities and bring diverse perspectives.

- Confidentiality: All information received from parents is treated confidentially. Contact details are kept private and never shared outside the group.
- Guide questions and experiences to the proper channels in line with school feedback guidelines.
- Maintain a safe and inclusive environment - no discriminatory, degrading or insulting comments.
Parent Representation Supports the Whole School Community
- Volunteering at PTA Events
Parent Reps can also be seen lending a hand at PTA events and activities relevant to their year group, such as the Halloween and Christmas Bazaar, International Food Festival, Staff Appreciation Day, school productions, House Day, and parent workshops. - Building Community Spirit
Organising coffee mornings, dinners, connecting families for playdates, or other social events, Parent Reps help parents connect and create opportunities for children to bond outside the classroom. These informal gatherings strengthen the sense of belonging for everyone involved. - Welcoming New Families
Parent Reps ensure that new families feel supported during their transition to Alice Smith and to Kuala Lumpur. Something as simple as a coffee invitation can go a long way in helping newcomers feel at home. - Managing the Class Kitty
Parent Reps coordinate the voluntary Class Kitty collection once a year. This fund supports teacher and assistant gifts and contributions to PTA events.
Our Parent Representatives are approachable, supportive, and willing to give a little extra time to help the school community flourish. By volunteering, you’ll build connections, create positive experiences for families, and strengthen the spirit of community that makes Alice Smith unique.
If you’re ready to make a difference and would like to get more involved with our parent volunteers, please reach out to pta@alice-smith.edu.my
The PTA also manages a Facebook page and Instagram account where parents can find information on PTA activities and events.
Together, we can continue to nurture a community that is welcoming, vibrant, and supportive for every family.
