December marked an exciting milestone for our Year 9 Sports Leaders as they wrapped up an incredible sports coaching unit with a remarkable Sports Festival. This vibrant event brought together over 80 children from two UNHCR partner schools. It was a culmination of weeks of dedicated preparation, collaboration, and skill-building, showcasing the power of sport to inspire and unite.

The Sports Festival featured six dynamic activity stations, each thoughtfully designed to engage and excite. From adrenaline-pumping parkour relays to classic multi-sport games like Dodgeball and the ever-popular “Cops & Robbers,” the event catered to a wide range of interests and abilities. Guided by our Sports Leaders, each session was carefully structured to ensure safety and fun while fostering an inclusive environment for all participants.

The result? A morning filled with energy, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Children from the UNHCR schools immersed themselves in the activities, their smiles and enthusiasm lighting up the event. For many, it was a rare opportunity to enjoy structured play, learn new skills, and form connections beyond their immediate community.

Leadership in Action

For the Year 9 Sports Leaders, the festival was more than an event - it was a chance to step into leadership roles and put their training into practice. They embraced the challenge enthusiastically and committed, designing and leading sessions showcasing their creativity and teamwork.

One student reflected on the experience: “I feel like the festival was an overall success in making the kids' day and hopefully giving them an unforgettable experience.” This sentiment echoed across the group, highlighting the profound impact of their efforts on both the children and themselves.

Two key learnings stood out for our young leaders:

  1. The Joy of Positive Impact: Witnessing the children’s joy and engagement was deeply rewarding. The Sports Leaders found immense satisfaction in knowing their efforts had made a meaningful difference, as evident in the laughter and excitement that filled the event.
  2. The Power of Teamwork: Planning and executing the festival required collaboration, communication, and adaptability. Working closely with peers to deliver a seamless and enjoyable experience strengthened their camaraderie and reinforced teamwork's importance in achieving shared goals.

What’s Next for Our Sports Leaders?

With the success of the Sports Festival behind them, our Year 9 Sports Leaders are now gearing up for their next challenge: an Event Management unit. This phase will see them taking their skills further, focusing on critical aspects such as communication, collaboration, and leadership. From marshalling to officiating and scorekeeping, they will take on new responsibilities, preparing them for even more significant challenges.

Through initiatives like these, Alice Smith School continues to empower students to grow as leaders, collaborators, and changemakers. The Sports Festival was a testament to sport's transformative potential, providing a day of fun and connection for the UNHCR children and an invaluable learning experience for our young leaders.
