Malaysian Batik is not just an art form; it is a vibrant symbol of our national heritage. With roots in centuries of tradition, it has evolved to showcase bold patterns and vivid colours inspired by nature, embodying both simplicity and energy. Malaysian Batik features larger, striking designs that reflect the spirit of its people.
At Alice Smith School, Batik is not only a cherished tradition but also a creative expression of our shared identity. It unites us by blending our heritage with fresh ideas, ensuring it remains timeless and relevant to our status as the original and leading international school in Kuala Lumpur.
The journey began with a Batik Design Competition, where students from both the Primary and Secondary campuses showcased their creativity. After careful consideration, the judges selected the winning entries from these talented students: Hyreen (10T), Ashley (10Q), Carla (5H), and Brandon (5H). Their imaginative ideas served as the foundation for this meaningful design.
After the elements were selected, local Malaysian artist Tang Yeok Khang (TYK), a highly regarded talent with years of experience in Batik art, was commissioned to bring these ideas to life in a stunning masterpiece. The final design is rich in meaning and symbolism, encapsulating the values and identity of Alice Smith School.
The Final Batik Design: Symbolism and Story
Stars: Inspired by our school's motto, "Sic Itur Ad Astra" ("Thus, one journeys to the stars"), the stars symbolise our aspiration to aim high, achieve excellence, and explore new possibilities.
Hibiscus, known as Bunga Raya, is Malaysia's national flower and symbolises love for the birth of our nation. Including it in the design honours the school's strong connections to Malaysian culture and heritage.
Community and Unity: The student with open arms signifies the joy and inclusivity that define Alice Smith School. Our diverse community celebrates different cultures and backgrounds, making our school a vibrant and unique community.
Our Shared Identity
