  • How has your time as a student at Alice Smith helped inspire you to be where you are today?

Alice Smith has been a great help to me ever since I thought of applying to medical school. I was part of the Future Doctors club for 3 years in a row with Ms. Gillespie and then Ms. Howard, both of whom were fantastic teachers. Additionally, the Higher Education team really helped me to perfect my personal statement and sift through it to find the best parts to push forward. They also wrote my references which were really well-written and presented me in the best light possible. Lastly, I’ll never forget my friends who not only gave me some friendly competition but were a great support during my difficult times.
  • How did it feel to receive the offer from Cambridge University? And was that always the university you aimed for?

Getting into Cambridge - especially for medicine - is still unbelievable! I never dreamed that I would be studying at such a prestigious university and - in fact - I almost didn’t apply because of how competitive the admissions process is. I’m so grateful and blessed to receive this offer and I really hope to make the best of it.
  • If you had to go back and do your high school experience all over again, what would you change and why?

Honestly, I wish I didn’t stress out so much about the whole admissions process. When I applied the first time around, I was so anxious that I would fail that - ironically- I ended up failing. However, I took a step back and learned from the experience. It’s the reflection that made me a stronger applicant and ultimately led me to study Medicine and Cambridge University.
  • What advice would you give our students at Alice Smith?

To anybody reading this blog; PLEASE apply to your dream universities. Whether it’s Oxbridge or an IVY league university, the best thing you can do is apply. The regret of not applying is far worse than rejection! Ultimately, your interviews make or break your application so just apply, do your best and leave the rest to fate. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be.
  • How did you spend your time during the gap year, to help you prepare for Cambridge?

A large chunk of my gap year was spent studying for the BMAT (the entry test - now scrapped) because these entry tests are vital to your application. After that, I spent a lot of time preparing for the interview as I had other interviews as well. Other than that, I just focused on personal goals I had like getting my driver’s licence.

Being part of Helping Hands, a non-profit charity Ahmed’s family started 9 years ago has truly taught him the value of every human life. Helping Hands helps fund healthcare for underprivileged people in rural villages throughout Asia. The shared relief experienced after patients were rescued from dire health-related circumstances made Ahmed desire to study medicine as he loves the challenge and privilege in being able to care for a community. Combining this with his passion in exploring the anatomy and physiology of the human body allows him to apply his knowledge and skills to make a positive contribution to society. The growth and reflection Ahmed has had from his life experiences is why he genuinely believes that medicine is the career best suited to him.

Ahmed's story isn't just about grades and achievements; it's about chasing dreams with grit and heart. His journey to Cambridge is a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all that anything is possible with hard work and big dreams!
