PE & Sport

Learn Something New Blog 1In PE we love to learn new things and over recent weeks our PE & Sport Department have been busy developing our knowledge across a range of activity areas.

During the Easter break our dedicated team of swim coaches spent two exhausting days upskilling their Lifeguarding skills by taking the ‘National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches’ (NRASTC) qualification.

The qualification refreshed our team’s knowledge on pool rescue, CPR and first aid whilst putting their swimming skills to the test. After some time out of the pool, it certainly blew off the cobwebs!

Since we returned to school our PE staff have been treated to a Tennis workshop from Mr Stockings and a Gymnastics masterclass from Miss Coates.

In our Tennis sessions we worked through teaching progressions of the groundstrokes - forehand and backhand as well as competing in a ‘Champion’ tennis game. Exploring teaching progression in this way will help us best support students in our Net Games lessons and also in Tennis ECAs too.

Mr Stockings’ rich knowledge and understanding of Tennis allowed our team to better understand how students learn the fundamentals of Tennis, starting with the foundations of footwork patterns and stroke techniques.

And although Mr Newbery will claim he was the ‘champion’, Tennis was the real winner!

Just last week Miss Coates led a Gymnastics workshop on the safe and effective delivery of ‘Flight’ including how to perform basic shapes, different types of vault and ways to dismount apparatus.

Taking time out of a busy school schedule to keep learning is so important when working in education.

We expect our students to come to school ready to learn and it’s no different for us as teachers, we love to acquire, connect and transfer new knowledge to try and enhance your child’s experience in PE & Sport.

Everyday is a school day!
