Melissa Tan's (KLASS alumna, 2004 - 2006) life has been a tapestry woven with threads of academic rigour, entrepreneurial spirit, and an unwavering dedication to family. This is the story of a woman who carved her own path, embraced challenges, and ultimately found success in both the corporate world and the most demanding role of all - motherhood.

Early Days and Education:

Melissa's journey began at Alice Smith School, where transitioning from the Singaporean education system proved initially difficult. However, supportive teachers, especially her history teacher, who ignited her passion for the subject, helped her find her footing. This focus on academics led her to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Economics at Cardiff University, followed by a Master's from Oxford.

From Investment Banking to Natural Latex Champion:

Starting her career as an investment banker, Melissa soon felt the pull of entrepreneurship. Joining the family business, GETHA, 13 years ago became a turning point. Here, she found a new passion in natural latex. Starting in sales, she eventually moved to export sales, contributing significantly to Getha's international growth.

Becoming Getha's CEO in 2019 was a significant honour for Melissa. However, leading a third-generation company presented unique challenges. Changing established mindsets and securing buy-in from stakeholders required patience, a willingness to adapt, and strong leadership qualities.

Balancing a demanding career with motherhood proved to be Melissa's greatest test. While she envisioned herself as a capable and strong mum, the reality presented its own set of challenges. Emotional meltdowns and the constant demands of motherhood threatened to overwhelm her.

Finding Support and Inner Strength:

Thankfully, Melissa didn't face these challenges alone. With the invaluable support of her therapist and a dedicated husband, she learned crucial tools for managing her emotions. This journey of self-discovery allowed her to connect with her inner self in a completely new way.

Recently, Melissa made the difficult but crucial decision to step back from the CEO role to focus on her daughters. This move prioritises her family's wellbeing, demonstrating the importance of balance in her life.

Melissa's journey offers valuable lessons in resilience, the power of support systems, and the importance of self-awareness. Her story reminds us that success can come in many forms and that true strength lies in adapting and growing alongside life's challenges. While she may have been a high achiever in the past, motherhood has shown her the value of introspection and prioritising mental well-being.

This isn't the end of Melissa's story; it's merely a new chapter. The future holds exciting possibilities for both her family and her personal endeavours. Her passion for nature, hiking, and even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (perhaps at a more relaxed pace!) ensures that her journey will continue to be an inspiring one.
