On 9th March 2024, the Alice Smith School hosted the Kuala Lumpur Senior Maths Challenge (KLSMC) for the first time. Nearly 200 teachers and students from Kuala Lumpur came together for a day of math challenges and excitement. All ready to showcase their mathematical skills.
Imagine this: a lively atmosphere, eager participants about to start a fun intellectual journey. The event had five tough math rounds and a thrilling pirate-themed treasure hunt. Its aim? To challenge skills and build friendships among peers. But that wasn't all. Guests enjoyed a delicious Bali-inspired poolside BBQ, bringing a tropical vibe to the party and satisfying their palates.
Leading the charge were senior prefects Derek and Sid, along with their dynamic team of prefects, whose inspirational leadership set the stage for a day of spirited competition and camaraderie. Adding to the ambiance was the infectious beats of DJ Austin.
Amidst the excitement, it was the student leaders who truly shone. Their dedication and passion surpassed all expectations, leaving an indelible mark on the inaugural KLSMC. With their stellar performance, they set a high standard for future competitions, cementing the event as a staple in the Kuala Lumpur schools' calendar.
Acknowledgment must also be given to the unsung heroes behind the scenes – the maintenance and domestic team, as well as the dedicated maths teachers. Their tireless efforts ensured that everything ran seamlessly, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in the day's festivities.
Our Year 13 students, Eugine, Raisa, Jordan, and Yi Qi, impressed everyone. They won the prestigious 'Warry Cup' for Alice Smith School. This achievement solidified their legacy in maths excellence. Their success, with classmates bound for top universities, was remarkable.
The Warry Cup honours Steve Warry, a passionate Alice Smith School Maths teacher who founded the South East Asian Mathematics Competition (SEAMC) in 2001. Steve envisioned Maths as a 'spectator sport.' Despite Steve's passing a week before the event, the competition proceeded as planned. His dream materialised through the student activities, all for the love of mathematics.
As the curtains closed on the inaugural KLSMC, it was clear that the event was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of collaboration, excellence, and community. Here's to many more years of mathematical brilliance and unforgettable moments at Alice Smith School and beyond.
Until next time, keep crunching those numbers, reaching for the stars, and exploring courageously!
