In an exhilarating display of innovation, teamwork, and sustainable engineering, students from Alice Smith School recently participated in the inaugural EViE Cup at Horizon Beranang Circuit. Our "Jolly Rodgers" team not only clinched first place in the race itself but secured an impressive third position overall in this groundbreaking competition.
A Journey Made Possible by Community Support
First and foremost, we must extend our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible PTA, whose generous funding made this transformative opportunity possible for our students. Their commitment to advancing STEM education and sustainable initiatives has opened doors that will positively impact our students' futures in meaningful ways for many years to come.
More Than Just a Race
The EViE Cup represents much more than a typical racing competition. Our students embarked on a comprehensive journey, starting with building their single-seater electric race car from a kit. They mastered engineering fundamentals and developed racing strategies. The project extended beyond the track, incorporating sustainability initiatives and charitable work, culminating in a portfolio presentation that showcased our students' holistic learning experiences.
Race Day Triumph
The excitement was palpable as our Jolly Rodgers team arrived at the circuit. After a morning of track familiarisation and final preparations, our team faced their first challenge when their car wouldn't start during the practice session. In a remarkable display of problem-solving skills, our students quickly diagnosed the issue and implemented an innovative solution, getting them back on track.
The main race showcased our team's exceptional strategic thinking. They observed that their first battery lasted only seven laps, with 35 laps ahead and three batteries available, our students demonstrated remarkable adaptability. They fine-tuned their energy management strategy, optimised their racing speed, and established effective communication protocols between drivers and pit crew. Each pit stop became a learning opportunity, with the team continuously refining their approach based on driver feedback.
Beyond the Podium
While the first-place race finish was certainly cause for celebration, the true victory lies in the comprehensive skills our students developed throughout this project. They've gained hands-on experience in:
- Sustainable engineering practices
- Strategic problem-solving
- Team communication and collaboration
- Team management and efficiency
- Real-world project management
Looking Forward
This inaugural EViE Cup has laid a strong foundation for future sustainable racing initiatives at Alice Smith School. The project aligns perfectly with our school's commitment to environmental responsibility. More importantly, it has inspired our students to think about how they can contribute to a more sustainable future through innovation and technology.
The success of our Jolly Rodgers team at the EViE Cup represents more than just a racing victory – it's a testament to what our students can achieve when given opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts. Once again, we extend our deepest appreciation to our PTA for making this transformative experience possible, and we look forward to seeing how this initiative will continue to inspire and educate our students into the future!
Congratulations to all participating teams, and especially to our Jolly Rodgers for their outstanding performance both on and off the track!
