Adventures in Purpose: Our Year 5 Residential Inspired by Explorers

Our Year 5 children embarked on their residential trip to Paradise Valley with a true sense of adventure. Throughout the journey, their energy was contagious as they enthusiastically embraced every challenge. The aim of the residential is twofold: to help students forge strong bonds with one another at the beginning of the school year, and to encourage them to step outside their comfort zones while drawing on their character strengths.

It was clear from the outset that the children seized every opportunity. Whether scaling the adventure climbing wall, zipping down the flying fox, or persevering through new activities, they demonstrated courage, resilience, and perseverance. These challenges not only built their physical confidence but also nurtured a growth mindset, showing them that effort leads to progress.

One highlight was watching the children apply their learning from our current inquiry unit, “How does purpose shape the choices people make?” Inspired by explorers from history and imagination, they built campfires, baked bread over the flames, and even practised archery to imagine what it might have been like to hunt for food. These hands-on activities linked their classroom learning to real-life scenarios, making abstract concepts tangible and memorable. The children reflected deeply on how purpose, whether survival, exploration, or community, drives human decisions and actions.

Collaboration and problem-solving were also central to the experience. Through team challenges, the children learned the importance of clear communication, reflection on strategies and active listening to each other’s ideas and feelings. These moments emphasised respect, empathy, and shared responsibility. The teams celebrated their successes and supported one another through setbacks, thereby strengthening the sense of camaraderie.

Evenings brought their own excitement, with disco dancing, puzzle-solving, and movie-watching, creating joyful memories and opportunities for relaxation. These moments away from formal activities allowed friendships to flourish and contributed to a welcoming, inclusive community spirit.

Every child took away something meaningful from the trip, whether it was building bravery, teamwork, cultivating self-belief, or rekindling a love of learning. Above all, they demonstrated a deeper understanding of our school community promise: to be kind, safe and purposeful. This promise guided their actions and attitudes throughout, reinforcing the values we cherish as a school.

Our educators look forward to taking the children on these adventures, and we know our students are already eager to explore the many opportunities that await them in Year 6. This trip has truly set the tone for a year filled with curiosity, confidence and connection.
